Distractions // Heather and Jessica

Jessica took a step into the room once Heather had made sure the close was clear. She was thankful Heather had done so because it would be pretty awkward to walk in on a recording session. She looked around and was yet again amazed by her new school. SHH seemed to have everything in everyone’s craziest dreams and worst nightmares. It was a school that knew no limits and knew not when to say “no.” The more Jess thought about it the more she realized the school generally let them roam around freely, it was actually kind of weird.

“Isn’t this place great?!” Jess exclaimed as she looked around. It wasn’t until she did a full spin that she realized it wasn’t exactly perfect. The color theme was one she was not interested in. It was red and black, something that was probably normal but to her seemed like what a vampire turned music producer would designate as non-threatening.  It was not the kind of place she wanted to have her uplifting pep-talk.

“It’s perfect,” Heather breathed, taking a seat at the sound controls. She ghosted her hands over the buttons, momentarily distracted. Shaking her head, she turned back to Jessica, giving her a small smile. Being back in a studio was putting her at peace better than she ever thought it would. Apparently she had missed making her music more than she thought.

“So,” she prompted, crossing her legs and cocking her head slightly. “What do you wanna sing? I’m really up for anything as long as I know the words.” Heather hummed to herself quietly, rocking slightly to the beat of the song in her head while she waited for Jess to decide. She figured it might be a good idea to let her pick, she tended to listen to a lot of music people didn’t like or listen to, for some reason. It was a hassle sometimes, but she dealt with it.

Jessica shrugged to herself. This was always the problem when she tried to sing with other people: finding a song. Jess was prone to music that was more indie and “hipster” by other people’s definition but she didn’t consider herself a “hipster,” she just thought she was Jess. She looked up at Heather and sighed heavily,”Well I guess we can start off by saying what our favorite bands are…maybe that would help us find something to sing in common.”

She bit her lip. Maybe that wasn’t a good idea. She looked over Heather and wondered if they could possibly find a band in common but then she realized something wonderful. All this thinking would take Heather’s mind off of what was bothering her! That always worked for Jess! She gave herself an imaginarey pat on the back, she was doing a good job.

“I like The Arctic Monkeys, St. Vincent, I live Kings of Leon, I like, The Strokes, Ellie Goulding, The White Stripes, Gnarls Barkley, Best Coast, Two Door Cinema Club, The Knife, Fever Ray, Lana Del Rey, CocoRosie and so so so so so much more!”

Laughing, Heather shook her head at the other girl. Oh god, those were pretty terrible. But it was funny, so who cared?...
